The contaminants—such as rust, oxides, paints, or oils—absorb the laser energy rapidly, causing them to instantly vaporize, sublimate, or thermally expand and detach from the surface. Because different materials have different absorption thresholds, the process can be precisely tuned to remove the top layer without affecting the underlying substrate.
